Description

Included removal of existing roof and installation of new built up roof. Included full lightning protection upgrade for rooftop. All roofing was performed while building was occupied. Included new electrical primary install for two buildings. Included new site lighting for the entire building.  All shutdowns were performed during off hours to cause minimal impact to students.

The summer project included the largest Variable Refrigerant Flow / Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRF/VRV) upgrade ever on the University of Florida campus and one of the largest in the state. Over 130 individual room VRF / VRV cassettes were installed. The project included installation of more cassettes than total days of construction (81). VRF / VRV cassettes can be individually controlled by the students to maximize occupant comfort. The tight summer constraints required full corridor mockups during the spring to prepare for summer installation and heavy coordination with the engineer and owner to allow for future fire sprinkler expansion. The project also consisted of full electrical upgrades in the building to allow for one full circuit for each student; one of the few student housing buildings with this capability.

Mitsubishi regional salesman Rick Shafer stated that “Simpson Hall is considered by Mitsubishi to be the example for what we expect on a VRF installation. Simpson Hall is being used as a model for Mitsubishi City MULTI Variable Refrigerant Flow systems with regard to preconstruction coordination and quality control of project installations throughout Florida. Many of the ideas and project management methods used at Simpson are being implemented on our current projects and expected on our future projects.”
